Can’t find a goddamn house. Rising interest rates also knocked down my buying power by 5%. Feeling like last year might have been the time to buy, but we were not at a place last year where that was a focus whatsoever. Hindsight and whatnot.
Best friend is moving away in seven days. His last day here was going to be March 1st, but for various circumstances will be leaving next Saturday. To be honest, I’m much less sad for myself, than I am sad for him, in that I feel he may be doing something very, very, very unwise. But you can’t pick your friend’s nose.
I bailed out of a hike tomorrow morning at Little Si due to tonight’s “storm.” I got the business from some of the participants. “There wasn’t any snow today though.” Read the weather advisory, guys... Gonna snow. Space crab is not down with the snow hikes... with all apologies to AestheticsInMotion. And of course Monday is clear with 0% precipitation. Audible groan.

That’s pretty shitty. But things will be on the upswing again soon. Keep your stick on the ice, Zoidberg.

Sucks about your buddy, hopefully he’s right or will realize his error quickly.
I’ve worn out a few sets of hiking boots out there, and I 100% agree with your call. Even if not snowing, hiking anything ending with Si on a weekend is a one way ticket to Crazytown. Plus most of the trail on Little Si is shaded, so if it does snow it’s not going anywhere. Throw in some wind, and yeah, I’m hanging out at home. Don’t need to get beaned by any trees.

House buying is a strange prospect.

But you already have a house. Make the most of what you’ve got.
I’ve already resigned myself to not owning a detached house within what I deem a reasonable commute here. Not gonna happen, not gonna dwell on it (just occasionally moan and snark about the market).
Here’s hoping we get a nice little snow event.

I will root for me being wrong, because the alternative is not good.
I’m not much of a hiker to begin with. Going to Si during a weather advisory, in February, doesn’t *seem* to the best idea.

$3,350 mortgage, oh yeah baby

Hang in there, you will find a house no one is looking for... that doesn’t have pieces of scrap wood inbetween the basement and house frame and falling apart.
Could move to the south, plenty of homes to choose from and hardly anyone buying :)

I hope for some lowland snow. Doggo loooooooooves some motherfuckin’ snow. And I’ll be within proximity to my coffee pot. Win-win.

I just liked the 3D interior viewing thing, more real estate thingies should use that

House hunting sucks. It’s a terrible, miserable process and I feel like the industry wants it that way to justify the existence of brokers and realtors.
The market isn’t helping the process either. Houses here seem to be on the market for one, maybe two weeks.

Yeah that is pretty sweet. Wish the last house I looked at that had that. Floor plan was a jumble-fuck of fuck. Actually couldn’t get a full bed in the 2nd bedroom. I think a queen would have the width of the 2nd bedroom. Also the main bath was between the living room and kitchen, but all the bedrooms were in the back of the house? The hell, man.

Here they’re pending after four or five days, with bidding wars, if they’re even decent. If there’s a home that has sat on the market for even 3 weeks, you can assume it’s haunted or sinking into the earth.

Ugh, yeah hopefully it works out ok for your buddy.
It doesn’t seem like the best idea, because it’s not. Doesn’t take much wind to cause substantial tree damage, especially in that area.

and a 2.5 hour commute each way...

People who commute from Whidbey are insane. 2 hour Ferry wait times on a Friday afternoon? Don’t forget it will take you over an hour to
get
to the ferry line in Mukilteo. Oh, you could always take highway 20 and drop down, right? Sure. That’ll be a little less than two hours —
without traffic
. Which is scenario that does not exist.

When I lived in LA I thought about buying a dumpy little 3 bd/1 ba postwar dingbat fixer-upper for about $200K. It backed onto a freeway and was on the approach path to LAX, but decided to wait for something a little better. That was around 2000/2001. I just looked on Zillow and the houses in that neighborhood now go for $900K-1.2M, with the $900K places still needing a bit of work. Ouch.
I’m in the market again, but this time in the Midwest and with budget less than what I was expecting to spend 18 years ago. Plenty of options, but I still loathe the process. I want something MCM but with a reasonable commute, and that’s proving to be a challenge. As usual, I can have one or the other, so it’s just a matter of determining which is more important.

That sounds like a mess. I once went to see an old apartment where the entirety of the living room ceiling had been (shittily) painted to look like the Sistine Chapel. So just like a bunch of Potato Jesuses on the ceiling, I distinctively remember immediately laughing and returning to the elevador while the realty agent kept quiet and later apologized.

My mom is planning on putting my childhood home up on market soon. It would likely be in your price range and is in the area.

If it’s in Mukilteo, I highly doubt that. On the plus side, she’s gonna make a killing.

I like that you’re not trying to talk yourself into anything. That means that you’ll be able to jump on the right thing when it presents itself with no regrets.
There, that’s all the positive energy I got. Hope it helps.

The good news is the economy will take a giant shit soon. This means prices in real estate will fall as unemployment rises and people get kicked out of their McMansions and the already non-trivial glut of real estate on the market rises sharply.
The bad news is the economy will take a giant shit soon. This you (and nearly everyone else) will at best make a lot less and at worst make nothing after joining the unemployed. Also lots of real estate and stock market folks will be the first in line for the backstab. But houses will be cheap again, so there’s that!

Damn...all will work itself out eventually sir! You could always move up here, depending where you are, real estate is CHEAPZ with a decent amount of land (also considering you are converting from American). My friend just got a 4 bedroom, 2 bath house for $100,000 CAD from a bank foreclosure...it did need some work, but hey, that’s like $80K US!
....but I imagine moving from the sunny climate of California to the opposite side of the continent in a different country may be a bit much. :P

I’m trying to move out of my mum’s house and have encountered the same issue with rentals. A small duplex here in my current county costs something like $1,300. Drive 20 miles north into Wisconsin and you can get the same thing for $750-$800. Yay, property taxes!

I’m so sick of owning a house. Repairs, maintenance, lawn mowing; it’s an endless time and money pit. I’m just sick of it.
When my kid goes off to college I want to move to a condo with tan carpet and white walls.
